Open Burning Permits

Clay Fire Territory is dedicated to ensuring safe and compliant open burning within our community. Below, you’ll find information about the open burning permit process, including necessary procedures, restrictions, and how to apply. Please review these details carefully before proceeding with your application.

Application Process

To apply for an open burning permit, you must complete the Application for Open Burning Permit and submit it at least 7 days prior to the planned burn date. Follow these steps:

1. Submit the Application

Return the completed form to one of our five fire stations.

2. Site Inspection

A fire department representative will visit the proposed burn site for inspection.

3. Health Department Approval

The application is forwarded to the St. Joseph County Health Department for approval. This entire process takes at least five (5) working days, excluding mail delivery times.

*NOTE: Burning is not allowed until you receive the approved and signed permit from the St. Joseph County Health Department.

Permit Details and Restrictions

Once approved, the permit is valid for the two-week period you specified on the application. All open burning must adhere to the following guidelines:
