The need for a second fire station in Clay Township became evident in 1962, leading to the acquisition of land and the construction of Clay Station 2 at 18355 Auten Road. This strategic location allowed the department to enhance its ability to respond to emergencies across a broader area.
In 1998, Station 2 underwent significant remodeling to increase space and improve functionality. The expansion included the addition of a third bay, administrative offices, a mechanic area, new living quarters, and extra space for the St. Joseph County Fire Dispatch Center. This upgrade was crucial in accommodating the growing needs of the department and ensuring more efficient operations.
The year 2007 saw further enhancements with the remodeling of the community building to create classrooms and establish the Clay Fire Command Training Center. This facility became a key component in providing ongoing training and development for the department’s personnel.
In 2008, the area behind the station was transformed into the Clay Fire Training Grounds, further supporting the department’s commitment to maintaining high standards of readiness and skill.
December 2014 marked the relocation of the St. Joseph County Fire Dispatch Center to join the St. Joseph County Communications Consortium, leading to the establishment of the Operation Center in January 2015 in the vacated dispatch center. This move was instrumental in streamlining communication and coordination across the county.
In 2013, the building was officially renamed Station 22, reflecting its important role and continued service to the community.
Station 22 is strategically situated at 18355 Auten Road, covering approximately 10 square miles. This district includes a critical area extending from Laurel Road to the West, Gumwood Road to the East, the Michigan State Line to the North, and Darden Road to the South. The station’s location allows for effective coverage and prompt response to a diverse range of emergencies within its service area.
Station 22 is equipped to handle a variety of emergency situations with its well-appointed facilities. The station can accommodate up to 12 firefighters on a 24-hour basis, ensuring a robust and responsive team is always available.
