The German Township Fire Department Station 1 was established in 1963, playing a crucial role in serving the community until July 31, 2006. On August 1, 2006, Clay Fire took over operations, providing 24/7 advanced life support and fire protection coverage for German Township, thus becoming Clay Fire Station 3. This transition marked a significant enhancement in the level of emergency services available to the community.
In 2007, the community of German Township supported an extensive renovation and expansion of the existing station, ensuring that the facility could better meet the demands of modern fire and emergency response. These improvements enhanced the station’s capabilities and infrastructure.
In 2013, the facility was officially renamed Station 23, reflecting its continued evolution and commitment to serving the German Township community.
Located at 51775 Portage Road, Station 23 covers approximately 15 square miles of the German Township community. This area includes 2.5 miles of the St. Joseph River and provides automatic aid to the South Bend Regional Airport. The response district extends from Pine Road to the West, Laurel Road to the East, the Michigan State Line to the North, and includes the City of South Bend and Edison Road to the South. This strategic location enables Station 23 to effectively respond to a wide range of emergencies within its service area.
